Summary

Qur’an 21:87–88 recalls Jonah’s appeal in darkness. Qur’an 37:139–148 narrates his flight, the fish, his rescue, and the plant. This longer reading follows each text in context, identifies the consequential difference, and grades the evidence for the connection.

Passages and their settings

Qur’an 21:87–88 recalls the “man of the fish” and centers a cry from darkness followed by rescue. Qur’an 37:139–148 gives more narrative movement: Jonah leaves, boards a ship, is taken by the fish, emerges, receives a plant, and his mission reaches a people. These passages are recognizably about the same prophet, but the amount of story they tell is not the same. A comparison should resist judging the shorter one incomplete simply because it has chosen to isolate the prayer.

Close comparison

  • Shared point: Qur’an 21:87–88 recalls Jonah’s appeal in darkness. Qur’an 37:139–148 narrates his flight, the fish, his rescue, and the plant.
  • Consequential difference: Al-Anbiyāʾ focuses on a short confession and divine answer; al-Ṣāffāt follows a wider chain of departure, danger, return, and mission.

Al-Anbiyāʾ uses Jonah’s voice as a model of appeal under distress; the brief scene can be remembered and applied without rehearsing the whole voyage. Al-Ṣāffāt makes the danger and return part of a chain of events. The plant and renewed relation to a community broaden the account beyond a private rescue. The different scopes change the moral emphasis: one spotlights a moment of acknowledgement, the other narrates departure, consequence, recovery, and mission.

Evidence assessment

The same named figure and crisis establish the connection within the Qur’an. A later comparative step could bring in the biblical book of Jonah, but importing its every detail here would conceal what each sūra actually says. Nor does narrative length establish an order of composition or historical reliability. The careful conclusion is that a prophetic cycle can be made instructive at several scales, and that a single prayer may carry a force that a fuller adventure distributes across multiple events.

The shorter study's evidence boundary remains important: The same prophet and crisis establish the link; neither passage alone contains every feature of the cycle.
