Mary’s annunciation in two Qur’anic passages
Traditions: Qur’an, Sūrat Āl ʿImrān; Qur’an, Sūrat Maryam Motif: Mary receives news of a child despite her question Connection verdict: Related Qur’anic presentations with different narrative framing Article status: Expanded Date: 2026-10-29
Summary
Qur’an 3:42–47 addresses Mary’s election and the coming child. Qur’an 19:16–21 narrates her withdrawal and encounter with a messenger.
Read the two scenes
In Āl ʿImrān, Mary has already been placed within a family story and a sacred setting before the angels announce Jesus. The passage emphasizes her chosen status and the child’s future. Sūrat Maryam moves the reader into a private withdrawal and a startling encounter with a messenger appearing in human form. Mary’s question matters in both, but the surroundings shape what the reader notices. This is an internal comparison of Qur’anic passages, not a second repetition of the earlier Gospel-versus-Qur’an annunciation study.
What connects—and what does not
Āl ʿImrān places the announcement amid family and temple material; Maryam follows a more immediate encounter in seclusion.
Both passages concern Mary and the child, but their voices, sequence, and thematic emphases are not identical.
Why read them side by side?
Reading both frames reveals how a familiar announcement can sound different in communal history and in personal encounter.

Research limit
A named parallel can establish literary reuse or related tradition; a general resemblance alone cannot prove borrowing. Linked editions and translations vary. Where a source is identified as secondary orientation, the comparison does not claim direct close reading of that tradition’s primary text.
